Debt: Most Of What We Fear Never Comes To Pass

debt

Right now, in my Money-Making Magic group, we are having some very honest discussions with people making brave decisions about when the time is right to admit you can’t pay your debts and what happens when you relinquish your credit rating as you go into a debt management plan.   And yesterday I posted this following message, in the spirit of optimism even thought it doesn’t necessarily read like that. One of our members suggested I might share it here on my blog for a wider audience. “Very rarely, over the years, but especially in the last say five or six [...]

British Families Are £6,000 Worse Off Than 3 Months Ago

Family

The Daily Mail reported on Saturday that British families are £6,000 worse off than three months ago. “Savers with large pension pots were the worst hit after the stock market collapsed in August. But soaring energy bills, dwindling house prices and the high cost of groceries have also taken their toll on households’ total wealth.” The third quarter of the year between June and September saw the biggest drop since reports beginning in 1997 by investment company Alliance Trust. Economic activity has slowed, there’s been a rise in unemployment, higher inflation causing higher basic goods prices and a loss of [...]

An Abundance of Hidden Surprises and Delights

MP900384903[1]

Yesterday I emailed just over 300 people to tell them I was back from my gap year and inviting them to join in with all sorts of things I’m up to. I received nice almost instant replies from Beryl, Sue and Sile saying yes please, good wishes from Mike & Steve, and confusion from Emma. I banged off instant invitations to B, S and S and was a little deflated that so few had noticed.   There, you see, that’s what happens if you buzz off for a year. The hole grows over. It didn’t occur to me that yesterday I [...]

Free Advice: How To Keep A (Mortgaged) Roof Over Your Head

Nimby

I heard this story a few weeks ago and was somewhat taken aback, I must confess. I was shocked at my own reaction both for and against its content and intention. The state-owned bank charged with recovering the Government’s £48billion investment in Bradford & Bingley and Northern Rock has identified around 30,000 borrowers who could get into financial difficulty when interest rates rise from current historic lows of 0.5%. This organisation known as UK Asset Resolution (UKAR) will telephone around 2,000 customers a week over the coming months and advise them on how best to manage their finances in order that [...]

The Realities of Being a UK Property Investor in 2011

puzzled property investor

Like almost everything I can think of, the realities of being a property investor are very different from those I imagined, although I had been the accidental owner of an informal HMO in the late Eighties and early Nineties, long since repossessed as a casualty of the last crash. This time around, I collected four buy to let flats between June 2004 and December 2007. And lots of my clients have BTL properties too. Given the strange times, I have called a few of them together for a summit so we can try to work out what’s the best thing [...]

The Weight of Poverty by Caitlin Moran

caitlin moran

“There is one, massive difference between being rich and being poor, and it is this: when you are poor, you feel heavy. The heaviness comes from the sclerosis of being broke. Because when you are poor, nothing ever changes. Every idea you have for moving things on is quashed through lack of money. You dream of a house with sky-blue walls; wearing a coat with red buttons; going out on Saturday and walking by a river. Instead, you see the same crack in the same wall, push-start the same car down the same hill, and nothing changes except for the [...]

What Would You Do With £101m From The Lottery?

c150_25_lottoballs

I was very excited about the lottery in the early days. But it’s over a decade since I’ve done it seriously. I do it vicariously now, watching others in syndicates, receiving tickets sometimes in birthday cards and so on. A bit of fun. And one of my friends helped me see it as a weekly charitable donation and that’s a wonderfully abundant take on it. I keep meaning to get back to doing it online for the charity angle. I am hoping to set up my own Entrepreneurs’ Prize Draw in 2012 or sooner, going to a meeting about that [...]
