My Inspirations for 2012: Bravery, Heroism, “Ordinariness” and Uncertainty

New_Year's_Resolutions

At least five inspirational women have passed through my house since Christmas at my invitation. I am grateful that I know some of the wisest women in personal development and I asked them if they would like to do swaps, to help each other get clear on what we want for ourselves in 2012. Four of these were coaches of one sort or another. I scanned down the list of coaches I know (only about 150!) and hand-picked the brightest who – bliss – I also count as friends.   Lucky, lucky me. And the fifth was an old friend from the Seventies, [...]

A Pleasing Definition of Success by Coach Wooden

john_wooden

Another bonus of my day out yesterday was being able to listen to Father Brian D’Arcy on Chris Evans’ radio show on BBCR2 in the morning in the little section towards the end called Pause for Thought. As I read somebody else say in the paper over the last few days, never mind two minutes silence on Remembrance Day, 11th November, how about a moment of silence every day? I couldn’t agree more and these little windows of opportunity to be thoughtful for a while are always welcome. Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic priest, was in charge of yesterday’s PFT [...]

Taking A Welcome Break And Making A Profit

Birchanger Welcome Break

I drove up the M11 yesterday morning, to visit a client I’ve known and loved forever, but I’d never been to see her place of work before.  I don’t get out much these days in my peaceful gap year, and en route I passed the new Olympic Park and was totally, utterly amazed and delighted by it. It was an OMG moment as it loomed up at me, out of the fog. As I was running a bit early, I stopped at a service station to check my emails and use their loo.  When I came out of the loo, [...]

Hooray! I Can Walk On The Grass – At Last

alnwick-duchess_2018759c

I was born a rebel. One of the strongest urges I feel all the time is to rebel. If I wanted to overcome that urge, and I don’t very often, I would have to either speak very sternly to myself, get angry, or just surrender to being normal like everyone else. Three not very nice choices. So usually I just rebel. Gentle Reader, I wish I could tell you I was proud of this. But I’m not; it’s just how it is round here. One of the expressions I use to explain how it feels to be me in this [...]

Why Is It So Hard To Say NO?

No

Today is November 1st. And today I started a challenge. To write a book within a month. It’s a bit like NaNoWriMo, about which I’ve written before, except I’m not writing a novel. I’m writing a memoir, and along with my two writing colleagues, we are each committed to writing 1,000 words a day. I’ve been preparing the ground for a while now, i.e. thinking about it and writing notes, downloading something called Scrivener. Yesterday I looked at my diary for November to work out what was going to get in my way. I have whole-day commitments on 4th, 7th and 11th [...]

How To Tell Someone You Love Them In Three Little Words

Feedback

When I was going through my first career change from accountant to coach, my elders encouraged me to ask ten people who knew me really well to send me a description of myself in three words. The name of the game here is to help you come to know your authentic self as it is appreciated by those around you, so that you can market to those strengths. One of my favourites at the time, from someone who had known me as a friend for at least two decades, was razor sharp and blunt. Witty, well written and spot on. [...]

Synchroncity: It’s A Sign

The Help

My experience when coaching people is that magic happens once we nail our colours to the mast and say out loud to ourselves and to The Universe what we want.   Lots of lovely little synchronicities – and sometimes quite big ones too – start to come together and even the tiniest little thing can be A Sign. I received one such sign myself yesterday. We went to see The Help. Don’t miss it. I cried like a leaky bucket all the way through. Delicious. Actually I started crying in the trailer for Spielberg’s version of War Horse even before we got going [...]

Finding A Tenner: The Simple Things Make Us Happy

PF-banknotes-sterl_1016971c

Quite a lot of jolly news in the paper today; course, it depends what you choose to notice, doesn’t it?   I loved this little story about why it really is the simple things that make us happy. Here’s the list compiled by the Daily Mail:         Finding a £10 note in an old pair of jeans Going on holiday Getting into bed with freshly washed sheets Swimming in the sea Waking up on a sunny day Sitting in the sun Being surprised with a gift or flowers Getting a nice message from a loved one Cuddles Receiving [...]

Help! The House Is On Fire…

Burning House 2

After a cheery week (not) when I’ve written more than once about the perils and pitfalls of UK residential property investing and ownership, here’s something which is hopefully a bit more cheery for a Friday.   Via Twitter, the fount of all knowledge, I found this fabulous, arty website which the photographers amongst you will really appreciate. Its called The Burning House and if you visit, you’ll see it’s self-explanatory. What would you take with you if the house were on fire and can you take a cool photo of it and get it featured on their website? I had a go and [...]

Free Advice: How To Keep A (Mortgaged) Roof Over Your Head

Nimby

I heard this story a few weeks ago and was somewhat taken aback, I must confess. I was shocked at my own reaction both for and against its content and intention. The state-owned bank charged with recovering the Government’s £48billion investment in Bradford & Bingley and Northern Rock has identified around 30,000 borrowers who could get into financial difficulty when interest rates rise from current historic lows of 0.5%. This organisation known as UK Asset Resolution (UKAR) will telephone around 2,000 customers a week over the coming months and advise them on how best to manage their finances in order that [...]
