Last week I asked readers of my newsletter to write to me and tell me “Who Are You?” I’ve received about a dozen interesting replies all updating me with where each correspondent is on their entrepreneurial journey. This one, from Paul Tucker of the Equilibrium Clinic Lewes, came in the form of a story so I asked Paul if I could publish it and he gave me permission. If you are on my newsletter list and haven’t yet got around to writing to me, I hope to hear from you. Do write. Love, Judith x
Thank you Judith for your regular personal and interesting newsletter. We spoke on Skype a couple of years ago, though it was my very first Skype call and the sound wasn’t working my end so we ended up on the phone. It was very helpful, and ever since I’ve regularly read your insightful newsletter. This is my story:
After qualifying as a Shiatsu practitioner in 1997 I worked in 8 different clinics in London. The first was a traditional Japanese-speaking hairdressing salon in Oxford Street, and the remainder varied enormously in quality. I saw some excellent practices and management, as well as some very poor ones. I made it my business to visit many more, and to try out treatments to see how the clinics operated (nice work if you can get it!), before moving to Sussex in 1999.
For many years I’d harboured the ambition of one day opening my own multi-disciplinary complementary medicine centre. Moving from London to Lewes finally enabled my wife and I to have the opportunity – we found the ideal premises (an oak-beamed listed building in the heart of the town, less than 2 minutes’ walk from the station), refurbished the entire interior & created new rooms, installed comfortable new couches, installed wall to wall 100% wool carpeting and painted the entire clinic with 100% organic paint, gathered together a team of professional and dedicated practitioners and friendly receptionists – and we are delighted that many are still with us more than 14 years on!
We wanted to create a warm, friendly, clean, organic environment for people to enjoy coming for treatments. So when in May 2000 we opened the doors, it was with bated breath that we awaited the public’s response. Now, nearly 15 years later, we’ve gone from strength to strength, made many friends and built links with local GPs, who are now confident to refer patients to us. I am confident, too, that we will continue to grow.
I’m so grateful to all clients who have used our services, and ever hopeful that we can reach out to welcome those who have yet to do so. We always ask new clients if they have any ideas or suggestions for improvements to the service they’ve received, and we’re starting to get regular feedback in the form of 4 and 5 star reviews on our busy website Equilibrium-Clinic.com where we’re getting around 200 visits a day.
Good luck with your great venture, and thanks again for all you do to help everyone!
With warm wishes.
