A Different Perspective

Depending on what I’m doing, I change my working environment all the time. It is refreshing and it gives me a chance to see life from a different perspective. It is really quite miraculous that the impact of that is not just physical, but emotional too. My lovely scrubbed pine kitchen-table style desk looks out of a beautiful window at the tall trees and the view beyond which includes the sunrise. The sunset is also reflected on those same trees. The beautiful light is always uplifting and the view is ever changing. That’s inspiring in itself and I often gaze […]

Oscars 2018: My Annual Film Marathon

My annual film marathon is underway, with the intention of seeing all the important ones before the Oscars 2018 on 4th March. Here’s my film wishlist and how I’m doing so far: Call Me By Your Name – Lovely. Lush. Love. Where on earth have I been? This is an impossibly beautiful film, a feast for the senses, to look at, to listen to, to feel, to remember. And that Timothée Chalamet is awesome. How old is he? He was also in Lady Bird, see below. Dunkirk – not mad keen to watch this one but my nephew says its worth […]

Q3: Why Am I Always Compelled to Start a New Notebook?

This is Question 3 from my book Your Biz Your Way: Q3 Why am I always compelled to start a new notebook? “The ‘I’ll start a new notebook for that idea’ syndrome means I always have many, many, notebooks on the go at any one time, plus bookmarks in Pocket and in different browsers, helpful ideas and notes on my phone, books laid open where I was taking notes… the resulting visual chaos means that from time to time I simply tidy everything away and start again.” What happens when you tidy everything away? Do you lose your notes and […]

Q2: Why Do I Feel I Must Do It All Myself?

This is Question 2 from my book Your Biz Your Way: Q2 Why do I feel I must do it all myself? Why can’t I accept help from my husband? A lot of my female (and male) clients share this particular brand of bonkersness and, in some households, you can’t accept help from your other half because it simply isn’t available or they are unable or unsympathetic, or both. Equally, many of us feel the pull to be independent, even within a marriage or a partnership. We want to earn money and pay our way. And how interesting this question comes […]

Q1: Have I Left It Too Late?

This is Question 1 from my book Your Biz Your Way: Q1 Have I left it too late? I checked with you before I answered this one. I wanted to know how old you are. And you told me that you are “45 – just starting a second career as an entrepreneur after 20 years in communications and marketing. Got to the top of the ladder and didn’t like the view!” 45. Dear God, you are a CHILD! OK, we can do this scientifically, or we can do it based on our beliefs. Or both. You are going to outlive […]

How to Start a Membership Site: Podcast Ep 164

One of my clients is exploring the use of Kajabi to help her with the creation of a membership site in part of her business. Nicola and I had used it when we were business partners together in another business during the Noughties and struggled with it then, so I asked her if she would like to address that topic on today’s radio show. Oh boy, would she! Nicola has her own membership site which clients access through her app. She uses a combination of Xenforo (for the content) and BB Press (for the forum). I know that I can, […]

Me and Writing and Pain

What is it about me and writing and pain? My body gives me messages when I write and, so far, they have all been painful ones. I have no idea yet how to interpret these messages. I shall let you know when I do. Last summer when I was writing my first proper book, Your Biz Your Way, I found myself in terrible sciatica pain which delayed the book by about a month. I have no idea why this happened. It became excruciatingly painful to sit in the writer’s chair. All I could do was lie down flat as a way […]

Going On Ahead

Yesterday a friend/client/colleague let me know that her close friend had died last weekend. We knew it was coming, but the end was sudden. Even when you know death is coming and it is inevitable, it is still and always a shock. “Even if you know what’s coming, you’re never prepared for how it feels.” Natalie Standiford The lady in question and I had spoken on the phone, I’d spoken to her husband too. We’d become good Facebook friends and I’d watched her story unfold over the last couple of years. I’d been a part of their final adventures as […]
