A Week Without a Website

Firstly apologies if you tried to click a link in my recent Friday newsletter and it didn’t work. My hosting company lost a server in the afternoon/evening of Friday 13th January (spooky music noise). And, at the time of writing, I am still waiting for it to be fully restored to me some nine days later. You will be able to see my website and this blog post online, but I have no access to plug-ins which means no SEO and no photos in each blog post and various other tedious compromises. Here are my observations from my time without a […]

Best Small Business Blogs for 2017

Just before Christmas, writer Daniel Kidd let me know that he had selected me as one of the twenty best small business blog for 2017. Always an honour to get recognised for blogging, or anything for that matter. Here’s a link to Daniel’s list – The Best 20 Small Business Blogs to Subscribe to for 2017. I use Feedly to subcribe to my favourite small business blogs and they are all written by my clients. Here’s a handful of the more prolific of my faves: Sam Dounis , Stories to Inspire Sally Kirkman Astrologer, Consultant to the Stars Alice Sheridan, Contemporary […]

Why I Can’t or Won’t Fit in a Box

I’ve done my 2017 planning and set my intentions and I’ve made the process very simple. I’ve had to. Because I can’t or won’t fit in a box. I would like to be both blogging (writing) and podcasting (speaking) on bigger virtual platforms than just my own where I currently do it, so that I can reach and help a bigger or wider audience. The podcast would take the form of a radio phone-in where people could ask questions about their businesses and get an opinion which would help them solve their own dilemmas. I already do this in my […]

Podcast Ep 107: Your First Million Online

In episode 107 of Own It the Podcast, Nicola and I debate making your first million online. I don’t believe it can be done. Nicola hasn’t done it, I haven’t done it, none of our clients have done it. But Nicola’s met people who have done it and she still firmly believes in the dream of internet millions. As does Cathie, who provides us with fodder for today’s Client Challenge of the Week which gives rise to a lively debate about what Cathie can achieve online in those ten years, and what not. And whether or not she should instead […]

More Like You

I have been examining the amount of work I put into marketing. Specifically the amount of time, because (honestly) it doesn’t really feel like work to me, not the vast majority of it anyway. I write a weekly newsletter and I make time to share it on social media. I co-create a weekly podcast and that I prepare for in advance, then we record it together, then I go off and write up the show notes in three different formats, on the podcast website, on my own website and now in a Facebook Note. And as each show goes live […]

Newsletters and Blogs

What’s the difference between a newsletter and a blog? An email address! Last week two of my clients asked me one of my favourite questions and one on which I am quite opinionated (you have been warned). What goes in a blog and what goes in a newsletter? Let’s do blogs first ‘cos they are a bit simpler to understand. You blog on your website first and foremost so that you will get some traffic (visitors) to it. If you just bang up a website no-one will know it’s there unless you tell us. And the best way to tell […]

Giving It All Away

October began well for me. I felt much more energetic and optimistic than I did during September. No idea why. Not examining it. Just taking advantage of it. I suspect the beautiful sunshine and clear blue skies had a lot to do with it, as I find that very mood-enhancing. And in that spirit, last weekend I thought to myself “Right, I’m going to step up the blogging again. Get back into the habit. I think I’ll aim for a blog post every day, Monday to Friday.” Happily I had already cleared one day, intending to be out of London on Tuesday, […]

Five Bloggy Dreams – Andrea, Paula, Justina, Sabine and Tracy

One of my genius ideas to promote our upcoming Summit all about living a life beyond the laptop was a blog competition. As Terry Wogan would have said, five entries “flooded in”, three of them last night just an hour or two before the deadline. They are from Andrea, Paula, Justina, Sabine and Tracy and they are as diverse as you might expect from five wonderful women. Andrea Jordan has been living the laptop lifestyle for some time now and is becoming a bit of an old hand. She’s recently left her home in New Zealand to live in Mexico […]

A Good Marketing Week

A good marketing week is one where you get to see the results on your marketing efforts. The vast majority of my marketing is done online. I don’t leave home for two reasons: I don’t like networking and I want my business to be global and the best way to reach out to the world is via the internet. I’ve been found by three different people for two different reasons this week, and they were all online. Two people who could only have found me via my website and blog and social media are a publisher and a journalist. The […]

Falling Off (and Getting Back On)

Last year in 2014 I blogged daily for the whole year. 365 blog posts. I impressed even myself. This year I’ve mostly been falling off. Don’t we all? We all get good at something, achieve the results we want and stop doing it. What are we like? BLOGGING In anticipation of Sam’s Blog Week which is free to join and runs between 7th and 11th December 2015, I am starting to blog again today. December is a holiday month for me with fewer 1-2-1 clients and therefore more personal time so I thought I’d start blogging again, perhaps as often […]
