Goals. Write them down, make them happen. Every book you read about successful people contains the part where they work out what they want, even if it’s only on the back of an envelope or fag packet which they then frequently recommend you shove in a drawer and forget about. When you are moving house, you find it again and notice how most – if not all of it – has magically come true. How does that work then? Those of us who live in the weird and wonderful world of manifestation believe that once you get clear about what you want, everything in the Universe conspires to help you.
Goals are about measurement. Tracking. A bit like the flight path of an airplane. How do they take off from Heathrow and land in Sydney? Because they know where they are going. But they don’t always stay rigidly on a direct route throughout their journey, there are obstacles to go round, no-fly zones, wind factors and so on.
So by the same token you have to know where you are going, and be specific. Then you can measure progress. There’s no need to beat yourself up about it, just measure it and change tack or navigation slightly until you are on target. Little incremental shifts which bring you back to the plan are sure to lead you to your ultimate destination. And there’s no need to go all the way to Sydney, if you don’t want to or if you change your mind about your preferred destination.
If you have no idea where you are going or what you want, how are you going to achieve your goals? How will you know when to celebrate? How will you know when you’ve arrived?
Once you have mastered goals, what about the somewhat lighter setting of intentions? I prefer these myself. They are about congruence. I intend to live in the sun, that’s just one of my intentions. I can tell whether the time I spend and the activities I pursue are in line with my intentions and my desired outcomes. If I notice I’m feeling a little off, maybe it’s because I’m pursuing something which has nothing to do with my intentions.
It’s also important to trust with intentions, and to leave room and allow manifestations. This is part of attracting what you desire. What you think about you get more of. Notice what you wish for, what you think about and the energy you put out into the world and notice how sticky that is, how you get more of it. Not getting what you want? Change your thoughts, change your intentions.
No-one is born great at either of these, these are skills, and there is a knack to both. And practice makes perfect.
Do you have a favourite notebook? I do. It’s full of my jottings of ideas, plans, thoughts and dreams and, most important of all, it’s full of goals – what I want to achieve and by when and how much, and intentions – the thoughts I put out into the world through my energies and actions that I hope and expect and trust will manifest what I want.
