Today’s blog guest is Susie Jones, who we all know as Mildred since the name of her fine jewellery design business is Mildred Jones. Here’s Susie a.k.a. Mildred, in her own words:
My name is Susie Jones and I am a fine jewellery designer. I am also a mother to a gorgeous nearly-three-year-old son, born and bred Londoner, fashion-lover, cheese addict, good listener, former City lawyer, fan of luxuries, yet also a down to earth and loyal Taurean.
My business is called Mildred Jones Fine Jewellery and I started it in 2013 because I was looking for a piece of jewellery to celebrate the birth of my son, and I was disappointed with what I found. I’m not a fan of throwaway items at the best of times, and for this item in particular, I wanted something which was made to last, and could be worn every day in any situation. I ended up designing my own piece and having it made. People loved the idea, and asked if I could make one for them, and a business idea was born.
What my business does best is help people who want a piece which is high quality (everything is hand made in the best workshops in London), bespoke (each piece tells a story), will become an heirloom which can be passed down through the generations and become part of the family history, and tells a story.
I love working with fabulous people and helping them capture and celebrate the important moments in their lives. People place their trust in me, which is an honour. I see my work as providing a tailored service as well as a physical product: I enjoy taking the time to understand what people want, and making the whole experience special for them.
I also can’t pretend that I miss commuting to an office and eating grim canteen food every day! These days I have time for a daily walk along the river, I collect my son from nursery, and my business meetings now consist of things like shopping for diamonds, or going to an exhibition at the V&A.
The surprises of starting my own business include how supportive and excited everyone has been. It shouldn’t really be a surprise though. I have got lovely friends after all.
The shocks are how hard it is to actually stop working! I really thought that when I left the City I would be very chilled and have an amazing work-life balance. In fact, as a start-up AND a parent of a toddler, I’m busier than ever. Luckily it is all very rewarding, and great fun: I wouldn’t swap it for the world.
How have I’ve grown as a person since becoming a business owner? I’ve realised I am a total control freak! I’m learning to let go in the areas where I can: the jewellery itself has to be perfect, but other things can either be delegated, or done later.
The thing I’m most looking forward to is seeing my latest pieces come to life. I am working on a space-themed range of earrings at the moment. They are going to be very cool!
