Today on Own It! the Podcast, Nicola and I talk about choosing your niche and identifying your ideal customer which is something every bit of start-up advice encourages. But how do you choose? And what if you are not ready to do that yet? Listen here to episode 102.
I found this quote from Jane Goodall on Facebook to be useful in this context:
“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make”
We talk about the sweet spot between what you have in your historical CV which gives you cred, what you will always love for the rest of your life, no matter what, and where you want to be of service and to whom… for now. And how to start creating content in those areas of interest and passion to you, even if you cannot yet answer the questions about ideal clients and markets and niches. Sometimes, when you do that, your niche finds you. That’s what happened to both of us.
I explain the stuggles some of my clients have with such issues and what I tell them and how they eventually push through to find all the answers themselves by trusting my advice to begin with and then emerging into their own choices and finding their voice. In the last month alone my clients have sent me some absolutely cracking newsletters after weeks and months of trying. Yes! They’ve got it right. Good for them. Pushing through.
In other news, Nicola tells us about settling into Stoupa and walking 8,000 steps a day. I tell the story of a lovely message I’d received from Daphne, of whom we are both superfans. Our words of the week are Hospitality to Strangers (in Greek!) and Portfolio.
We update our plans on marketing our own podcast and we share what’s impressed us this week – it’s Irene Conlin and her membership site called The Employer Toolbox. And a couple of questions from the work I am doing for myself and with clients via The Five-Minute Journal, namely:
- What would make today great (asked in the AM) and
- How could I have made today even better (asked in the PM) note the emphasis on the word “I”.
If you like audio and nearly ad-free radio, you’ll love Own It! And if you are already a listener, do please help us double our audience by introducing our weekly show to one entrepreneurial friend. Thank you. We love and appreciate you very much for your loyalty. What would a podcast be without our gentle listeners?
