Podcast Ep 119: Brain Picker or Joint Venture Partner?

The topic of today’s episode 119 of Own It! the Podcast is what to do when someone approaches you with the prospect of a tempting and lucrative joint venture in which you might be interested; a share of the profits in swap for your expertise? You give them a free consultation and advise your prospective business partner how to handle their opportunity but they keep coming back and back and wanting to pick your brain for free, at unsociable hours, without an appointment, via Facebook Messenger. What would you do? Nicola and I debate the number of times this has […]

The Power of Words

I used to think my favourite thing in the whole wide world was the written word. Certainly it is right up there. I love to write, this is my fourth blog post written on the trot today, for instance. And they just rolled off my virtual pen. What I love about writing is being fully heard. People read what I write and they know what I’m thinking. In my family we don’t do that. We are talkers. We talk, we don’t listen. And we interrupt. Certainly I still have that disease, the one of interrupting, and I am training myself […]

Words: 31 Days of Abundance, Day Nine

I love words, me. I love numbers too. And I’d be hard pressed to choose between the two, honestly. But if I absolutely had to choose, it would be words for me. I think. Words. The written word and the spoken word. I’ve just come off a telephone call recording a podcast with my old pal Nicola Cairncross for The Business Success Factory during which we gabbled at each other for an hour and I really hope there was some value in it for the listener because I know both she and I had a jolly good time using words […]

Blogging: Words That Resonate And Rankle

I love blogging and I love words, but some days I think the creative well has run dry. So I use a tip I learned from Michael Neill. I tell myself I’m not going to write today, I’m just going to open up WordPress. And before I know it, the piece is done. This tip can be applied to almost anything we think we don’t want to do. I’m not going to cut the grass, I’m just going to get the mower out. I’m not going to jog, I’m just going to put on my running shorts and trainers and stand […]

My 500th Blog Post: Word Wordy Word Words

Actually my 500th blog post was yesterday, but who’s counting! Everything is perfect just exactly as it is. At this blogging milestone I wonder about why I write and I think it distils down to this: I love words. It really is that simple and it really is a love. OK, as an accountant turned coach I always loved (and still love) numbers but my first love, way before the delicious logic of maths, was words. As a child and later a teenager up in my bedroom in the school holidays, decades before electronic geekery was the first route to […]

Blogging And Other Challenges

I love blogging, me. And mostly I like a challenge too but I’m not sure about the handful of blogging and other challenges which have come my way lately and whether they are just normal, or whether I am to take some special meaning from them. Let me explain: We have been offline recently at one of my other websites while we deal with a legal challenge from a firm of lawyers who say their US-based clients have trademarked one of the words in our name. So we haven’t been blogging there for a number of weeks while we address […]

Oh Lord Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood

Yesterday, inadvertently, I managed to upset and confuse people with my written words. This is very sad to me and not least because I intend that my next career will be as a writer, so that ambition slipped back a notch or two yesterday.   How did this come about? I commented on a high traffic website and used one word badly. My intention was love, I think everyone knows this about me. But the person who I was loving (pretty anonymously, or so I thought) in the comment read it with quite another pair of spectacles on. And when I read the […]

Hands Off My Favourite Word: Entrepreneur

One of my very favourite words in the world, perhaps my No 1 all-time favourite, is ENTREPRENEUR. I love it so much I adopted it at AdoptAWord.com which helps children with communication difficulties. Their website allows you to buy merchandise with your word on it so I can see on my keyring every day that I am an ENTREPRENEUR, lest I forget, which is very, very unlikely but just in case. But, here’s the bad news. Increasingly people are bastardising my favourite word. The first culprit was Mumpreneur (yuk!), which has now been officially recognised and added to the dictionary. God. Help. […]

It’s Only Words, And Words Are All I Have

I love words. Always have. Always will. And having declared myself on Tuesday to be a writer (!), I’m noticing them more. This morning I exchanged emails with a couple of authors – co-incidentally – and one complimented me on my choice of a particular word and with the other, I noticed a phrase she used which resonated with me. Two phrases, actually. Let’s do the word first. Sanguine. I know from the dormant part of me that fancies herself a linguist that sanguine has something to do with blood. And that awareness colours (pardon the pun) my use of the word, […]
